PTA Overview

Jefferson Elementary has a very active Parent Teacher Association. Check back frequently as we'll be posting all sorts of information about what we do and ways for every parent to get involved throughout the year.

PTA UPDATES - March 2014

Dear Jefferson Families --

Thank you to all the parents who helped with Jog-A-Thon and our Great Kindness Challenge!  It was a CRAZY week for everyone, but truly amazing things happened!  We managed to brave the weird and ever-changing weather, to have a successful Jog-A-Thon! We are still collecting money...so please be sure to collect from your family and friends, and get those envelopes back to school!  We'll give you a total as soon as we can!  Your children certainly gave it their all...they ran/walked/skipped around the track and were just amazing. Our Kids For Peace group (led by Mrs. Doncouse) inspired the rest of our students to rally behind a cause, and worked very diligently to recycle cans and bottles to collect money to send to Scott Maenpaa to help in his fundraising efforts to receive a new service dog. I get chills when I think about it! Because of their hard work, we were able to donate $338 to help Scott get his service dog. We've been told that he has been matched with a dog named CASH, and if they work well together and it's a good match, Scott will be granted his new service companion maybe as early as mid April!  Keep your fingers crossed -- We wish them both well!!

Our Multicultural Festival Committee, under the seasoned expertise of Michelle Fourmont, has had their kick off meeeting. Anyone who is willing to donate their time, talent, treasure, or contacts, should let us know!!  We'd love to see some fresh new faces...and we are always happy to embrace some new ideas. Now is the time because planning is key to the success of this event. We really need a few folks to fill some roles that had some very dynamic folks in them in past years...so come one, come all...we want to hear from you! Please shoot us an email at jeffersonpta@gmail.com if you have an idea or are willing to help. We will put you to work! There are jobs for everyone -- things that can be done ahead of time, things that can be done the day of the event (May 17th), and things we'll need help with for the long haul.

Our Yearbook team, headed by Marcy Donnager, wants to include more candid shots and photos in this year's yearbook. There is a great website that will allow teachers and parents to upload photos. Please visit http://www.replayit.com/r/9821196/ and click on "Submit Pics" to upload your pictures. Our yearbook staff will go through and choose the photos. Please go through your photos from IB Rallys, dances, and classroom activities, and share them with us! Remember -- this year we have a color yearbook! I'm working on 5th grade baby photos...so please send in those 5th grade photos if you haven't already done so. I would also love some candids of your fifth graders from previous years!  Just be sure to indicate who else is in the photo if at all possible -- I won't have the time to look up all the faces! We will be including these items in the 5th grade slideshow at their promotion ceremony. I know...get the kleenex ready!

We have decided to replace the desks that are currently in our art room with some tables. This should allow for a little more versatility when it comes to making art! We want to be able to allow our students the opportunity to do more art outdoors and to really be able to have some good work space, which the current set up doesn't really allow for.  If you or your family would be interested in donating a table in your child or family's name, please contact me.  Businesses are also welcomed to sponsor a table -- we never turn donors away! =D

We are preparing to nominate a slate of PTA Executive Board Officers for 2014-2015. I know it may seem early in the year, but it is quite a process. If you are interested in joining the PTA Executive Board, or serving on one of our standing committees, please let me know. We really do have all sorts of positions that are suited for a variety of people....and I promise we won't steer you into a position you can't handle. If you have an interest, but need more information, I'd certainly be happy to sit down and meet with you and see if we can figure out what works best for you.

That's it for now...Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or if you'd just like to chat.

Best wishes to you all --

Kris Doan

Volunteer Opportunities

Read Across America: This amazing program is about to start! Every classroom needs helpers to help keep track of our student's progress, and we always need extra help reading with students! It is a fun, and worthwhile activity that really helps build our children's self esteem and can make a difference in discovering the wonders and magic of reading! Please volunteer some time in the classroom if you can -- we always need the help! Please let us know if you can help by sending email to jeffersonpta@gmail.com if you're interested!

Go GREEN: We would like to relaunch the GO GREEN lunch recycling again at Jefferson. Please let us know if this is something you would like to be a part of organizing with students. Last year, it was a BIG success!  Recycling efforts reduced the garbage bag usage from 16 bags to 6 the first day!  Volunteers are needed to help keep it going on a daily basis until the students 'get it'. The lunch session is from 11:30am to 1pm daily. Please email jeffersonpta@gmail.com if you are interested.

Playground Partners: Danny Wilson is our current Playground guru and he's looking for help. Danny provides extra fun on Fridays with guided activities at recess like kickball. This is a fun, easy way to get involved with kids, and they really look forward to it. Danny needs to train someone now, as his child will be graduating from Jefferson this June. Let us know if you can help!
