Parents -- Our 3rd-5th grade students will begin the Smarter Balanced Testing Pilot Program beginning April 21st and running through May 9th. Our 5th Graders will be the first group of students that take this test, with the first testing date on April 21st. Your teacher will provide you with the testing schedule for your student. Please make sure that they attend each day, for the entire morning of each testing session.
There are some additional pieces of information you may find helpful! The Carlsbad Unified School District offices have provided the following recommendations to help assist our students with this testing:
1) Show the SBAC Practice Test Overview video (4 minutes) to walk your students through how to use the tools available to them in the student portal. Pause when necessary to clarify.
2) Walk through the Practice Test with them or have them take it themselves in a computer lab (or do both). This will show them what the questions look like as they are very different than the CSTs. I strongly suggest they view all parts of the test, just as I recommended for you.
3) Post the link to the Practice Test https://sbacpt.tds.airast.org/student/ on your School Loop website and encourage your students and parents to access them from home.
4) Remind your students that they will have to TYPE many of their answers, so if they need extra practice in typing, they are running out of time. Elementary – use Type to Learn. Secondary – I suggest http://www.typingweb.com as it’s free and provides a leveling test to give them a true reading of how well they type. **Jefferson families -- Please know that directions for using the Type to Learn Program at home can be found in our Jaguar Express**!
